Aim
- To determine the clinical effectiveness and cost effective ness of fluoxetine treatment plus supportive care versus supportive care alone, for mild to moderate depression in patients presenting with somatic symptoms to primary care
- To determine the impact of the initial severity of depression in the effectiveness and relative costs of these two approaches
- To carry out exploratory analyses for the impact of the following factors on the effectiveness of these two approaches: the patients self reported duration of depressive symptoms; demographic variables; life events and difficulties; social support; cognitive style; the number of physical symptoms; and the patient's self rating of the cause of their illness (physical versus psychological as main problem)
Method
RCT with 2 arms; fluoxetine plus supportive care vs supportive care alone. Recruitment from primary care practices in 3 centres: Southampton, Institute of Psychiatry/KCL and Liverpool.
